Abstract: Smale’s 7th problem asks for an efficient description of N points in the unit sphere with quasioptimal logarithmic energy (to be though of as the repulsion energy one would expect if the points were equal-charged particles). In this talk I will explain the origins of this problem, the reason why it was included in Smale’s list, the state of the art in the research and my personal viewpoint on its destiny.
